The TechKnow Space….Contributing to a Sustainable Eco System

All electronic devices, like smartphones, tablets, computers and other digital devices, require the use of natural materials physically taken from the Earth in their manufacture.

These physical materials have to be first mined, extracted and processed before they are ready for use in the manufacture of cars, homes, digital products, and other physical and tangible possessions.

Over time, these possessions start malfunctioning and need to be repaired to restore their proper functioning, or refurbished to restore their aesthetic appearance.

We have all experienced the breakdowns of our computer hard drives, display monitors, keyboards, touchscreens, digitizers, speaker ports, Wi-Fi antennas and other components in our computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, and other digital products .

Have a look at the following article, keeping in mind that laptops alone use 70% of their energy during manufacturing and not by the consumer:

Digital Trends   reports that the number of mobile phones is expected to exceed the world population by 2014"

At this point in our experience with a malfunctioning device, we are faced with two choices:

  • Dump and throw away the problem device and replace it with a new one
  • Repair/Refurbish the device to extend it’s economic and functional life

The first choice leads to a waste of economic/physical resources.

By weight, electronics require far more resources than any other product. A half- pound phone requires over 165 pounds of raw material. Fuelled by the demand for cool gadgets, iron ore production has increased by 180%, cobalt by 165%, and lithium by 125% in the last 10 years.

Did you know? Mining for the materials in electronics is  incredibly destructive . Getting a single ounce of gold out of the earth creates 80 tons of waste.

What’s equally alarming is that these physical products, whose material components were painstakingly gouged from the bowels of the earth before being manufactured into consumer products, would now need to be disposed of by being dumped back into the landfills.

It is estimated that over 1 million cell phones are disposed of annually in  North America .

These dumped products would now need tens to hundreds to thousands of years before the constituent materials can be decomposed and rendered safe  for the soil, water, air and other natural resources vital for sustaining healthy human living.

Did you know? Plastic can take anywhere from 10 years to 450 years to decompose, depending on what it has been manufactured for.

The ecosystem sustainability is tragically compromised and impaired by such dumping actions. The toxic effects of such disposition are shared not just by the folks who directly consume these physical products but also by all the inhabitants of the earth who share the ecosystems.

The most environmentally friendly smartphone is the one that never gets built.

The TechKnow Space is in the business of reducing wasteful human consumption and disposal by Repairing, Refurbishing and Reusing these products when they malfunction or fail.

The useable life of these repaired and refurbished digital products is thus extended to allow for many years of productive use by the original owners, or by secondary owners who buy these used phones, or who are given these repaired products by their friends and family.

The TechKnow Space is focused on reducing the human carbon footprint and contributing to a sustainable and healthy ecosystem for the well-being of all the living:

Recycling just one cell phone saves enough energy to power a laptop for 44 hours.

- If Amercans alone recycled all of the 130 million cell phones that are tossed aside annually in the United States, we could save enough energy to power more than 24,000 homes for a year.

- For every one million cell phones recycled, we can recover 75 pounds of gold, 772 pounds of silver, 33 pounds of palladium, and 35,274 pounds of copper; cell phones also contain tin, zinc and platinum.

- Recycling one million cell phones also saves enough energy to provide electricity to 185 U.S. households for a year.

-Cell phones, PDAs and other electronic devices also contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and brominated flame retardants. Many of those materials can be recycled and reused; none of them should go into landfills where they can contaminate air, soil and groundwater
