An iPhone screen needs to be replaced when either one of the two components has sustained damage:

  1. The outer screen: This is also referred to as the Touchscreen or Digitizer or the Glass.
  2. The inner screen: This is also referred to as the Display or the LCD.

The original first 2 iPhones came with two screen components installed separately.

All other iPhones come with the two screen components fused together as one complete assembly which requires it to be replaced as a whole.

Apple has decided to do this for several reasons:

  • With a fused touchscreen and LCD there is never an issue with dust getting in between the layers of the screen

  • The screen is thinner, as there is no air gap between the digitizer and the LCD. This allowed Apple to make iPhones a little thinner overall

  • The thin iPhone screen makes the colours of the LCD look more vibrant and the image clearer.

A Review by Mike Wakunick

"This place offers exceptional service for an affordable price. I've been here twice over the last 3 years (iPhone 4 screen repair). They quoted me the standard 1 hour service for the repair to be completed, and it was finished within 20 minutes. As we all know, it's imperative to have our mobile devices working top notch, and we cannot be without them for a week while they are sent in to some unknown location to be repaired. TechKnow space is trustworthy, and you will get your device back the same morning or afternoon - 1 hr for phones and 2 hrs for tablets. They even have a customer lounge area with free wi-fi and a large screen TV for you to use while you wait for your repair to be done. Otherwise, you can leave and come back. Always have had great experiences with TechKnow Space, and will continue to be a customer here in the future! :)"

The proximity sensor is usually only damaged as a result of screen breakage due to its being directly behind the glass.

What causes a battery to swell?

There is a lot of technical information available about chemical reactions and 'outgassing' and about how batteries work internally.

From over a decade of experience, having repaired hudreds of thousands of devices, we know there a typically 3 possible reasons for battery swell:

  • Logic board damage ~50% of the time.

Things like liquid, impact, long exposure to sunlight or freezing temperatures can cause damage to the mainboard - shorting the battery and causing it to overheat.

  • Continuing to charge an old battery.

  • Using a damaged charger.
